Why have wooden shutters instead of curtains?

Curtains have been increasingly under siege now for many years – and it is not difficult to see why. For hundreds of years ago they were a good idea – in fact the best, if not only the idea – for dressing windows, retaining warmth and maintaining privacy. But times changed, and 21 Century alternatives to leaving curtains in the shade.

There were a number of pretenders to the throne, but of all the alternativesis available, wooden plantation shutters have emerged as the clear winner. It is not difficult to understand why, because they are practical, aesthetically pleasing and durable.

What's more, unlike curtains, they provide good insulation against noise – a real advantage, especially for those near a busy road. And shutters in a variety of styles and designs are adapted to every style of house – or office – from a centuries-old cottage, one room apartment in the attic of old age.

It is notsurprising that they are practical – they take their name from the popular design of shutters on the American plantations, where protection from intense heat and light of particular importance.
